MODAL AUXILIARY

modal is an auxilary verb that gives additional meaning to sharpenthe meaning of the sentence.
·         Modal prefect
a)  S+Could + have + V3/been
to express the ability to do something in the past but not in use or something that could have happened in the past
Example:
Ø  You could have forgotten the accident just now
Ø  I could have done my home-work yesterday
Ø  They could have eaten my pizza last night
Ø  He could not have gone with her yesterday

b)  Might + have  + V3/been
used to express a possibility of what has happened in the past
Example:
Ø  He might have gone by train early this morning
Ø  They might have waited the bus few minutes ago
Ø  The plane might have gone before we came
Ø  You might have been a police last year




c)  should + have + V3/been
used to express something that has happened in the past or suggestions should be done in the past
Example:
Ø  You should have met with her last night
Ø  He should have taken bath early this morning
Ø  They should have caught the cat before breakfast
Ø  She should not have forgotten a promise last week

d)  must + have + V3/been
conclusions about the state was nothing that happened in the past
Example:
Ø  He must have paid the payment last year
Ø  I must have sent my mail before they went to school
Ø   He must have been thieves stealing in your house
Ø  She must have been a model showing in that event last night

a)      Ability (can)
used in a sentence that states the ability
Example:
Ø  I can crawl as fast as a crocodile
Ø  I can eat many breads
Ø  She can jump on the big rock

b)      Permission (may/can)
used to express something that requires approval
Example:
Ø  May I go with you?
Ø  Can you give me some money?
Ø  May I borrow your pen?
c)      Obligation (should)
used to express a suggestion to do
Example:
Ø  You should make something good
Ø  They should kill that bugs
Ø  You should drink a glass of waterg

d)     Necessity (must)
statement must be or must be done
Example:
Ø  You must do everything I say
Ø  You must not break the rule
Ø  I must pass the exam

e)      Possibility (may)
statements which may or may not happen
Example:
Ø  I may give you a chance to kill that roach
Ø  You may go to the party with your sister
Ø  They may borrow you some pencil to write a  mail
